Our Eventful Past
Chattel and Strut was born from a passion for building furniture and exceptional design. Our co-founders, Matt Vuolo and Jeff Klein, both grew up making furniture for themselves because they either didn’t like the quality or the aesthetics of what they could find. They soon found fulfillment in building furniture for those around them. Upon meeting in 2009, they became fast friends. A few projects together later, they knew they wanted to start a company to share the same joy they have for beautiful design.
To complete the team, Matt brought Danielle Jackson, a long time friend, to help Chattel and Strut with the branding through her amazing talent for graphic design. A mutual friend, Jamie Loberman, had his own company designing and coding, which gave Chattel and Strut business insight and IT support. The final piece of the puzzle came with the addition of Taylor Whitmer, our business and marketing maven.
Our team is a dedicated group of young idealists, who have worked for years polishing their individual talents to then coalesce creating Chattel and Strut. We all live in San Francisco, and as hard as we work, we don’t live for it. We live to compete in triathlons, ride motorcycles, cook gourmet meals, and experience the city we love. This translates to our furniture by giving us respect for the environment around us. This means we only use waterborne finishes, sustainable and indigenous American hardwoods, and recycled materials. We expect the same from our vendors. This is then finally conveyed to our clients in heirloom quality furniture with a social and historical narrative.
